Ponce Puerto Rico
Ponce is a smaller more laid back version of Old San Juan. This historic area is packed with beautifully restored 19th century buildings with intricately carved Spanish detailing. The narrow roads radiate from a typical wide-open Spanish plaza, Plaza Las Delicias, or Plaza of Delights. The focal point of the Square is Parque de Bombas a boldly painted red and black striped building, which houses a n intersting firefighter museum. Centered in the plaza amongst the lushly landscaped open areas and walkways lies the Fuente de Leones, Fountain of Lions, a piece brought in from the 1939 World's Fair in New York. Standing sentry behind the Parque de Bombas is Our Lady of Guadeloupe Cathedral whose white washed walls and stained glass windows reflect the blue heavens above.
Ponce is home to a wide range of museums with themes like Puerto Rican history, fine art, Ponce history, Puerto Rican music and more. High above town you can also visit Serralles Castle Museum, the old digs of the Don Q rum family as well as El Vigia, a 100-foot concrete cross which towers over Ponce affording fine views of the town.
A hop-on, hop-off trolley allows visitors easy access to most of the sites and museums around town.
